Scorsese told Hill that he “forgot it was me” when he watched the movie in a new interview between the pair

Martin Scorsese forgot to expect his own scenes as an actor in Jonah Hill’s new movie, Outcome, when he sat down to watch the comedy.

“I forgot it was me,” Scorsese, 83, told Hill, 42, in a conversation for Interview published Thursday, April 9. Hill, who cowrote, directed and costars in the new movie with Keanu Reeves, Cameron Diaz and Matt Bomer, told Scorsese early in their chat that he loved Scorsese’s character and asked him if it was “hard to watch yourself.”

“I couldn’t see what you and your DP were doing with the camera,” Scorsese noted of his time in front of the camera for his scenes.

“Do you remember when you walked on set and I was like, ‘Do you want to see the frame?’ You had to fight against your instincts to look, but you knew you were in good hands with Benoît [Debie, the cinematographer],” Hill then replied.

“Well, what you have in the frame is a narrative. So I did forget it was me up there, which was really interesting,” Scorsese added. “That’s because of your guidance and your patience, and Keanu. Poor Keanu.”

Outcome follows Reeves, 61, as “a beloved Hollywood star who must dive into the depths of his hidden demons after he is extorted with a mysterious video that’s sure to shatter his image and end his career,” per an official Apple TV synopsis. Reeves’ character, Reef Hawk, seeks out people in his past who he may have wronged in an attempt to figure out who is blackmailing him.

Scorsese, whom Hill worked with in the 2013 movie The Wolf of Wall Street, figures into the picture as Reef’s former talent agent as a child star, whom the fictional actor jettisoned after he got older and grew more successful. Scorsese is joined by a number of celebrities who make small appearances in the movie, either as fictional characters or themselves, including Susan Lucci, Laverne Cox, Roy Wood Jr., Cameron Diaz, David Spade and Drew Barrymore.

Scorsese is famous for directing movies behind the camera, but he has stepped in front of the camera for acting roles in and out of his own films over the decades. In 2025, Scorsese was nominated for an Emmy Award for his guest role on the comedy The Studio and also appeared in a movie titled In the Hand of Dante. Scorsese also has a voice role in the upcoming Star Wars movie The Mandalorian and Grogu, which releases May 22.

Outcome begins streaming on Apple TV April 10.
