Antoine Walker suffered a double whammy in 2010. That year, with his financial books showing $12.7 million in liabilities and only $4.3 million in assets, Walker filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy and had to sell even his 2006 championship ring from the Miami Heat to help pay off his financial obligations.

But not only did Walker lose all of his $108 million career earnings in 12 NBA seasons played. He also lost the love of his life – or so he thought. Walker was engaged to Basketball Wives star Evelyn Lozada, but once Walker ran out of bread, she ran away from him.

“My thing with Evelyn is she reaped a lot of benefits of my wealth,”said Walker. “And when it got tight, she chose to go a different direction. So that’s the problem that I have with Evelyn. She went on with her reality show and we all know all the relationships she’s been in since me.”

“It hasn’t been about let me make sure Antoine is ok. So that’s a big difference. I dated Evelyn for ten years. In 1999,  she got to reap the whole benefits of the whole process,” he added.

She left after he went broke

Lozada was working as an assistant to a famous entertainment lawyer in South Beach when she met Walker, who played for the Miami Heat from 2005-07 and was part of the Heat’s 2006 championship team. They dated and fell in love. Walker took Lozada and her daughter from a previous relationship and then got engaged in 2007. But that’s when things got rough for Walker.

The Heat traded him to the Minnesota Timberwolves in October 2007. Eight months later, the Wolves dealt Walker to the Memphis Grizzlies. Antoine appeared in only two preseason games and was waived. With his finances starting to dry up, he attempted an NBA comeback but ended up playing in Puerto Rico in early 2010. Three months later, ‘Toine filed for bankruptcy.

“It’s tough when you take care of people and you make sure they’re good…their family…their daughter and then they just go left field,” Toine added. “We had a nasty… She caught me in a nasty breakup. We had broken up for a minute there. That’s what delayed the marriage. And then she left when things started to hit the fan.”

She moved on without checking on him

While Walker struggled to pay off his debts, Lozada starred on VH1’s Basketball Wives reality series for five years and totally forgot about the man who spent not only his time but also his wealth with her for over a decade and moved on with her life, moving from one relationship to another like an NBA journeyman changing teams.

Meanwhile, Antoine simplified his life and two-and-a-half years after going broke, he started to recover. In 2014, Walker spoke to ESPN and took a shot at Lozada again while talking about the pitfalls of having a relationship while playing in the NBA.

“A lot of guys lose a lot of their wealth over women,” Walker explained. “Now I never was married, but I was with a woman for over 10 years. And when I was going through bankruptcy, I was like, ‘Man, I done spent, net cash, over $4-5 million on this woman?'”

“You don’t think about that. That kills your wealth, too. That needs to be made aware to a lot of guys, too. I’m not saying that you’re not supposed to get married or anything like that, but we have to be cautious about that. That sometimes plays a huge part in our finances, too, toward the end,” he concluded.

Evelyn went on to have many relationships after Antoine. But there is no verified record of Walker having another serious affair since Lozada. You can’t blame him, though. After losing $108 million and being left out to fend on his own, it’s always hard to trust again.
