Blue Moon, the real-life period drama starring Andrew Scott and Ethan Hawke, has landed a new UK streaming home. The film, which was released in US cinemas late last year, is now available to watch on on Sky Cinema and to stream on NOW.

Set in 1943, Blue Moon sees Hawke as lyricist Lorenz Hart, one half of songwriting duo Rodgers and Hart, with Scott as Rodgers.

The film was inspired by the letters of Elizabeth Weiland (played by Margaret Qualley) to Hart. Bobby Cannavale also stars.

Set mostly in a single restaurant location, Blue Moon follows Hart on the opening night of Oklahoma!, the musical penned by Hart’s former collaborator Rodgers and his new writing partner Oscar Hammerstein II.

As the rave reviews come in for Oklahoma!, Hart struggles with self-doubt and the knowledge that Rodgers has moved on from him.

Directed by Boyhood’s Richard Linklater, Blue Moon was penned by Robert Kaplow whose script received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay.

Hawke also received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor, losing out to Sinners’ Michael B. Jordan earlier this year.

Blue Moon holds an 89% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics particularly praising the film for its direction and Hawke’s performance.

Subculture Entertainment wrote: “Ethan Hawke brings to life one of the best screenplays that Hollywood has ever seen with a performance that needs to be seen to be believed.”

While Newsday said that “Hawke delivers a performance for the ages in one of Richard Linklater’s best movies.”

Uncut added that: “For all Hawke’s storied history with Richard Linklater, this might be their finest collaboration yet. A profound, bittersweet rhapsody to the power of words and music.”

Another user effused: “If you love jazz, if you love whiskey, if you love cocktails, if you love the vintage charm of New York bars, if you love literature, if you love romance, if you’ve ever known disappointment and heartache-you will savour this film, deeply and completely.”

While a third described it as an “absolutely spectacular film. The kind of movie that makes you happy and proud to be a lover of cinema”.

Blue Moon is now available to watch on on Sky Cinema and to stream on NOW with a Cinema membership.
