I remember watching documentaries when I was younger about the early 20th century. It included interviews with older people who were around at the time. It was an important, landmark time in the history of Britain, as the country’s Queen, and ruler of around 23% of the world’s population, Victoria, died in 1901.
We have recently lived through another one of those milestone points in our country’s story, with the passing of the late Queen Elizabeth II. I am proud to have been an Elizabethan, living for 25 years as one of her subjects. I was lucky enough to be selected to cover the monarch’s funeral for our sister news sites in the East Midlands in 2022, and made sure to take the opportunity to bow as her coffin passed me on The Mall.
That’s because I – like millions around the globe – had the utmost respect for the late Queen.
I’m sure it was there once, but, if a new bombshell claim is to be believed, Harry’s respect for his grandmother had dissipated towards the end of her reign – the longest in British history.

Royal historian Hugo Vickers wrote in his new book, Queen Elizabeth II: A Personal History, that the late sovereign was “deeply hurt by her grandson’s attacks”, and became so distrustful of Harry that she “refused to answer his phone calls unless there was a witness who could record what was said”.
No matter your standing in society, if relations with your grandparents have reached this point, it means something has gone badly wrong, and you should probably look at your own conduct.
Her Majesty clearly loved her grandson, and only wanted the best for him, but it seems he had turned into a selfish person, who did not comprehend fully the impact his actions were having on his wider family.
At least, that’s the best we can hope for.
Even worse would be that he in fact did understand, and was intending to actively harm his relatives, including someone who had devoted her entire life to her subjects’ service.
She certainly would not decide she’d had enough, and run off to California, after enjoying an extremely lavish wedding at Windsor Chapel, which required the Metropolitan Police – of course funded by the taxpayer – to fork out £6.35million on security.
Apparently, the late Queen would only speak to Harry if there were a lady-in-waiting in the room, and would limit herself to “monosyllabic conversations made up of ‘yes’ and ‘no’”, in order to “protect herself”.
Vickers added that “one cannot underestimate the pain the Sussexes caused the Queen in the last years of her life”.
Meghan, it has been claimed, was rude to one of the gardeners maintaining Frogmore Cottage, and the monarch “flew into a rage”, driving to the property to fume at her granddaughter-in-law.
Moreover, the sovereign apparently refused to meet the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in private as she first met the couple’s daughter, her great-granddaughter, Princess Lilibet.
The savvy Queen allegedly said that the meeting should be chaperoned by a lady-in-waiting, and ordered that no photographer should be permitted at the event, lest pictures appeared in the US media or on Netflix.
If this is true, it seems Harry stooped so low as to use his grandmother to give himself and his wife positive publicity.
And that’s enough to make one’s blood boil.
