It’s no secret that Pilates is having a moment with more and more women taking to the mat or reformer. According to data from ClassPass, the booking platform for fitness classes, Pilates classes were the most booked out of all the platform’s offerings. The report also noted a 66% year-over-year increase in Pilates bookings last year.

It’s likely that some of this growth has to do with the famous women number of celebrities swear by Pilates, whether done on a mat or reformer machine, to stay active even before it was trendy. For example, Kerry Washington regularly shares her sessions on the reformer on her socials and Lady Gaga likes it to help manage her chronic pain.

Although there’s an emphasis on core strength, Pilates also involves precise movements designed to The resistance training method is beloved for its emphasis on stability, balance and flexibility.

Even Black Widow herself does Pilates: Scarlett Johansson shared on a 2023 episode of The Skinny Confidential podcast that she’s replaced intense weight lifting with regular Pilates classes.

“I think it’s hard to lift heavy weights at a certain point. You just, your body reacts in a different way than it (did)—the recovery is tough,” the Academy Award nominee said. “And so I started doing Pilates to try to give myself a break from some of the heavy weightlifting and I just fell in love with it. And now I do that mostly.”
