Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor is enduring the “worst of both worlds” as he remains ensconced at Marsh Farm, according to a royal expert. The former Duke of York has cut an increasingly isolated figure since being ousted from his Royal Lodge residence.
Since relocating from Windsor to Norfolk, he has been spotted on the occasional dog walk or behind the wheel of his car. The move, announced following the removal of his royal titles, was reportedly bankrolled by a “six-figure payout” from King Charles, who is set to continue funding Andrew privately.
The relocation followed mounting concerns over Andrew’s association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and the subsequent release of the so-called Epstein files. He has strenuously denied all allegations levelled against him.
In February, he was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office, though he was later released under investigation.
Since settling in Norfolk, Andrew is understood to have received no visits from his elder brother or his nephew, Prince William, though both Prince Edward and Princess Anne have made the trip to see him. Edward and his wife Sophie are reported to have shared dinner at Wood Farm — his temporary residence prior to his move to Marsh Farm earlier this month — in what was described as a “brotherly welfare check”.

However, Daily Mail Diary Editor Richard Eden has stated he is “not sympathetic” towards the former Duke of York, arguing that Charles ought not to have financed his brother’s relocation. Eden instead urged Andrew to “get a job,” remarking: “There’s loads of jobs available in this country.” He continued: “At the moment, it’s the worst of all worlds, he’s moping around, using the king’s money, but they’re encouraging people to visit Sandringham this summer, so keep an eye out for Andrew, you might see him in the background somewhere.”
When questioned about whether the Royal Family harbour sympathy towards Andrew, the paper’s Royal Editor Rebecca English added: “He’s their brother at the end of the day and I think there is concern among some family members for him as someone who is their brother and will always be their blood brother but I think it’s fair to say sympathy has run out.”
While the Duke of Edinburgh is reported to have paid Andrew a visit at Wood Farm, the Princess Royal is believed to have contacted him by telephone. This follows claims that Anne even indicated she would be prepared to accommodate him at Gatcombe Park in Gloucestershire.

Former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond has explained why she thinks it’s Edward and Anne who are rallying round Andrew. Speaking to the Mirror, she said: “I think this is an illustration of the separation of the institution of monarchy and the royal family.
The King and his heir, William, have a vested interest in protecting the monarchy – and feel they have a duty to do so. Andrew poses a threat to the good name of the monarchy, and so both Charles and William are keeping their distance.
“I’m sure Anne and Edward feel the same loyalty to the Crown, but they are also slightly more at liberty to keep in contact with their brother, Andrew. And it seems they are doing so.”
Separately, there have been growing calls for Andrew to be stripped of the Freedom of the City of London, an honour he inherited from his late father. However, the City of London Corporation (CLC) has informed its councillors that the title cannot be revoked.
