While news of a celebrity engagement or wedding breaks almost every day, there are actually *a lot* of famous couples who’ve decided marriage just isn’t for them. From longtime partners to the perpetually engaged, if you’re like me, you assumed these A-list duos were married. Surprise! They’re not. From Kurt and Goldie to Oprah and Stedman, prepare to be shook.
1) Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell

Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn have been together since 1983, have one son, and raised Goldie’s children from her previous marriage (Oliver and Kate Hudson!) together. “A lasting relationship isn’t about marriage,” Goldie told E! News in 2015. “It’s about compatibility and communication. And you both need to want it to work. If one person does not want it to work, it isn’t going to work.”
2) Oprah Winfrey and Stedman Graham

After meeting in 1986 and getting engaged in 1993, Oprah and Stedman refer to their relationship as a “spiritual partnership.” “The moment after I said yes to his proposal, I had doubts. I realized I didn’t actually want a marriage. I wanted to be asked,” Oprah wrote in a column for O, The Oprah Magazine. “He and I agree that had we tied the marital knot, we would not still be together.”
3) Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale

Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale have been together since 2012. The couple, who have two children together, refer to one another as “husband” and “wife” and wear bands on their ring fingers, but they never officially tied the knot.
4) Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez

Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez are not only the creative geniuses behind fashion house Proenza Schouler, they’ve been together since their junior year at Parsons School of Design. While they’ve successfully collaborated on the runway, they aren’t married. Lazaro responded with a simple “no comment” when asked when the couple will tie the knot at “The Atelier with Alina Cho” speaker series at The Met.
5) Maya Rudolph and Paul Thomas Anderson

The Bridesmaids star has been in a relationship with filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson since 2001. They have four children and Maya refers to Paul as her husband, but they just never made it official. “People know what that means. It means he’s the father of my child, and I live with him, and we are a couple, and we are not going anywhere,” Maya told The New York Times in 2018.
6) Leslie Bibb and Sam Rockwell

After meeting at Chateau Marmont in 2007 and more than 10 years together, Leslie Bibb and Sam Rockwell are happy with the way things are—being unmarried. The secret to their strong relationship? “Maybe it’s probably something about the way we grew up, but I feel like if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” Bibb said on Today with Jenna & Friends in 2025.
7) Anna Kournikova and Enrique Iglesias

Tennis star Anna Kournikova and singer Enrique Iglesias began dating in 2001, after meeting on the set of his “Escape” music video. Despite rumors constantly swirling that the notoriously private couple have tied the knot, they haven’t. They did, however, welcome their fourth child in December 2025.
8) Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys

They were costars on The Americans and have been together since 2014, but aren’t official official. Keri was previously married to Shane Deary from 2007 until 2014, while Matthew has never been married. In addition to raising Keri’s two children from her previous marriage, the couple has one son together.
9) Paul Dano and Zoe Kazan

The actors have an under the radar relationship, despite being together since 2007. In 2018, they welcomed a daughter and collaborated together on the film Wildlife—but don’t expect a proposal anytime soon. They then welcomed a son in 2022. The actress told The Daily Beast that getting married “isn’t high on my list, we’re not religious. But it’s really nice to make a life with him.”
10) Ricky Gervais and Jane Fallon

Ricky Gervais and Jane Fallon met in 1982 at University College London and have built their lives together over the past four decades. “We are married for all intents and purposes, everything’s shared and actually our fake marriage has lasted longer than a real one…but there’s no point in us having an actual ceremony before the eyes of God because there is no God,” Ricky told The Sunday Times in 2010.
11) Sarah Paulson and Holland Taylor

But more so than their choice to not get married, the public often critiques their 32-year age gap. Sarah told Harper’s Bazaar she credits this to “our own ageist thinking and the idea that to be old is to cease to have any desire.”

Despite being engaged at one point, the actress and Snow Patrol musician have decided to remain longterm partners. “He’s not my fiancé. We were engaged to be married, but now we’re just together,” Courteney said on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. “We broke off our engagement, and he moved to England, then we got back together, and it’s actually better than it was before.”
13) Deborah Eisenberg and Wallace Shawn

14) Rooney Mara and Joaquin Phoenix
