WHAT HAPPENED: By 1984, Marvin Gaye — known for iconic hits like “What’s Going On” and “Let’s Get It On” — had moved back in with his parents following struggles with substance abuse and mental health issues, per the Los Angeles Times. On April 1, 1984 — just a day before Marvin’s 45th birthday — an argument between his parents escalated when Marvin intervened. According to police, Marvin “pushed the father around pretty good” during the dispute. Shortly after, Marvin Sr. retrieved a gun — one that Marvin had previously given him — and shot his son twice in the chest, killing him. Marvin Sr. ultimately received a six-year suspended sentence and five years of probation for the murder due to his age and poor health.
