Zara Tindall competed in the Burnham Market International Horse Trials last weekend, but just days before, she stepped out at another equestrian event that nearly everyone missed.

The 44-year-old daughter of Princess Anne and her ex-husband, Captain Mark Phillips, was spotted on 16 April at the final day fixture at the Ludlow Racecourse in Shropshire.

She wore a decidedly more understated look than she wore to Royal Ascot, the prestigious horse racing event she attends each year alongside her uncle, King Charles, and other senior members of the royal family.

Zara’s casual race day look

Zara opted for black wide-leg jeans styled with Fairfax & Favor’s ‘Callie’ jacket, as identified by Royal British Fashion on Instagram. The £345 wool-blend jacket featured oversized patch pockets and what the brand has called “antique brass hardware”.

She also wore a thick black and white checked scarf around her neck and carried the ‘Lottie Bag in Black Pebble’ by Aspinal of London around her body. Her hair was pulled back into a ponytail, and she finished off her look with a pair of tortoiseshell sunglasses.

Zara’s formal race day attire

For events like Royal Ascot and the Grand National earlier this month, Zara always pulls out all the stops. While we wait to see what she wears this Ascot season, we’re still obsessed with her standout look from 2025.

Stepping out on Ladies Day, the cousin of Prince William went for a vintage movie star-inspired look with a black and white ‘Camille’ dress by Laura Green with elbow-length sleeves and a belted waist.

It was styled with round shades, a pair of pearlescent drop earrings and a statement Juliette Botterill hat. She also chose black stilettos with gold buckle detailing.

Keeping it cool

That isn’t to say that Zara always goes formal on race day. She wore a take on her black jeans look while attending the Badminton Horse Trials last May.

The royal exuded cool in mid-wash barrel-leg jeans styled with white trainers, the ‘Alexandra’ style, by Fairfax & Favor, as well as the brand’s ‘Ottilie’ boucle jacket, which, much like the ‘Callie’ style, featured statement buttons and large pockets down each side.

A low ponytail was also the chosen hairstyle for the event at Badminton Park, signalling Zara’s style chameleon approach to a day at the races.
