Ben Stiller’s basketball fandom on Saturday clashed with breaking news on the shooting outside the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, leading some Republicans to question the reason behind one of his social media posts.
Stiller, known for his avid support of the New York Knicks, used his X account for several hours to react to the key plays by the team as they evened up their NBA Playoffs series against the Atlanta Hawks in a Game 4 win on the road.
The game happened to wrap up around 8:53 p.m. ET, mere minutes after The Associated Press, Reuters and other news-related accounts began to send out alerts on U.S. Secret Service agents removing Trump from the dinner.
That’s when Stiller delivered this simple three-word post to his followers: “Got it done.”
While New Yorkers and Stiller’s followers are quite familiar with his love for the Knicks, his post caught the attention of some folks in MAGA world.
“Got what done?” replied Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) in a post to X.
“Wtf?” wrote Richard Grenell, Trump’s envoy for special missions.
More right-wing critics weighed in, as well, with one user arguing that Stiller was trying to be “clever” with his post and another calling him a “piece of shit.”
While Stiller, like other celebrities, has voiced his displeasure with the White House using clips of him without his permission, his post appears to be a case of unfortunate timing.
X did its part in noting this by dropping Community Notes under Mace and Grenell’s posts.

A number of basketball fans later made a mockery of the right-wing replies, including one Knicks fan account that called out “complete idiots” who didn’t realize the comedian was “simply celebrating a Knicks playoff win.”

I can’t even believe I have to say this, but here goes.
Hey MAGA: he’s talking about the fucking Knicks. He’s been posting for hours about basketball.

The MAGA confusion didn’t appear to faze Stiller, who dropped a salute emoji in a post to the platform on Sunday morning.
He also dropped three fire emojis in response to a post by the Knicks’ official account asking fans how they’re feeling following the win.
