Jesy Nelson has revealed that her daughter, Story, has reached a new stage of development, months on from being diagnosed with a rare condition.

The 34-year-old former Little Mix singer revealed in January that her two daughters, Ocean and Story, had been diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 1 (SMA1), a rare condition affecting the muscles.

She has now revealed that one of her 11-month-old twins has spoken for the first time, despite her diagnosis. “Story said Muma for the first time my life is complete,” she captioned a video on her Instagram story. The video showed her baby saying “Muma” while lying under a blanket at looking up at her mother.

SMA1 is a rare genetic condition that causes progressive muscle weakness and can impact walking and breathing. She revealed in January that her daughters may never be able to walk.

“We were told they were never going to be able to walk. They would probably never regain their neck strength. They will be disabled. The best thing we can do right now is to get them treatment and hope for the best,” she added. “Thankfully the girls have had their treatment which I’m so grateful for. If they didn’t have it they would die,” she said when she announced the news months ago.

In March she announced she had to put both of her children in splints because of their health issues: “So today, I had to go pick up the girls’ splints today because their feet are pointing, and they need to be flattened out. It made me really sad. Have you ever seen anything cuter in your life? Made me sad though, because it’s just another reminder.”

There is currently no cure for SMA, but there are treatments and support available to help people have the best possible quality of life. Children are born with SMA if both parents have a faulty gene that causes the condition — one in 40 is a carrier.

The singer and her former musician fiancé Zion Foster, 27, welcomed their daughters Ocean Jade and Story Monroe Nelson-Foster in May after a difficult pregnancy. The couple has since gone on to split.

Since announcing her daughter diagnosis in January, Jesy has been campaigning for the NHS to introduce testing on newborns for SMA1, explaining that because they were diagnosed at a later stage, her daughters may be unable to walk.

Jesy’s daughters require round-the-clock care and earlier this month, her car, along with vital medical equipment, was stolen from her driveway.
