Jon M. Chu (“Wicked”), Joachim Rønning (“Tron: Ares”), and the pair of Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (“Bad Boys: Ride or Die”) are all said to be on an early consideration list to helm a third “Top Gun” film at Paramount Pictures.
The InSneider broke the report which comes two years after the film entered development in early 2024 when writer Ehren Kruger became attached and Tom Cruise was set to return.
Since then the biggest question mark had been over the involvement of “Top Gun: Maverick” director Joseph Kosinski and whether he would return. That was answered recently with Kosinski having booked locked in “Miami Vice ’85” to film as his next feature.
As a result, a third film is now an “open directing assignment” and so Cruise and producer Jerry Bruckheimer are reportedly seeking a filmmaker who can gel with their vision.
Those names appear to be the first candidates on that list – all talent that can direct a major studio project but also serve under strict creative oversight. Notably missing are some of Cruise’s recent collaborators like Christopher McQuarrie and Doug Liman.
McQuarrie is still believed to have contributed to Kruger’s script. Cruise also has his Liman-directed undersea film “Deeper” stalled in development and its possible that could become a bargining chip in order to commit to a third “Top Gun”.
