This Saturday, Princess Charlotte, daughter of Prince William and Princess Kate, turns 11, and Kensington Palace has shared her official birthday portrait on social media to mark the occasion. Set against an idyllic backdrop and dressed in a casual look that highlights just how quickly she’s growing up, along with subtle style nods to her mother, Charlotte of Wales shows exactly why she knows how to strike the perfect balance between classic elegance and youthful freshness. With her long hair, one of her most recognizable features; a blue manicure that breaks with royal protocol; and a ring on her right hand that hints at her own personal choices, the eldest child of the heir to the throne makes it clear she’s no longer a little girl.

The image feels effortlessly natural, as if it could have been taken by either of her parents during an impromptu getaway to the Cotswolds. The portrait shared on social media reflects Charlotte’s preference for appearing approachable and intimate, far removed from the formal expectations that come with, and will continue to come with, her role within the institution.

With her very long hair and blue nails paired with rings, something we’ve seen her lean into before, the princess offers a small glimpse into her inner world, even if only through a single image. This isn’t the first time her portraits have carried this simple, relatable feel. A very similar photo was released for her ninth birthday, showing her in the garden, striking a natural pose and wearing a look that could easily come from the catalog of any major city retailer.

At just 11 years old, Charlotte of Wales already seems ready to reinterpret the codes that have defined the rhythm of the British monarchy for decades. It’s no coincidence. This isn’t the first time she’s stepped away from the traditional pale pinks or nude tones when it comes to her nails. If she turned heads at last year’s Wimbledon final with a bubblegum pink manicure that made global headlines, she’s now doing it again with a pastel blue shade, one we already saw in the family photo the Waleses shared for their 15th wedding anniversary and now in her birthday portrait. These seemingly simple choices, in reality, point to a new way of understanding beauty within the royal sphere.

This Saturday, Princess Charlotte won’t have her grandfather by her side, a notable absence on such a special day. King Charles III is traveling abroad to the United States and Bermuda for a state visit, preventing him from attending his granddaughter’s birthday. The two share a close relationship, and he has always shown a special warmth and connection with her.

Charlotte won’t be the only one blowing out candles in May. Just four days later, next Wednesday, her cousin Archie, son of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, will celebrate his seventh birthday in Montecito, California, far removed from life within the British monarchy.

A “mini Kate”

Over the past 11 years, Princess Charlotte has made it clear that there’s no better style inspiration than her own mother. The only daughter of the Prince and Princess of Wales has drawn from Kate’s wardrobe to win over the public. We’ve seen her embrace simpler looks, like in her birthday portrait, but also coordinate her outfits with her mother’s color choices.

For example, at Trooping the Colour 2025, Princess Charlotte created a subtle color match with the Catherine Walker coatdress Kate wore as she returned to public life.

Her future within the institution

In recent weeks, the Princess has been in the spotlight due to her education. According to our sister brand HELLO!, the Prince and Princess of Wales have already begun searching for a new school for her, considering the next steps she’ll need to take as she continues shaping the role that is gradually coming into focus within the institution.

This latest birthday, then, feels like the prelude to a year full of potential changes.

Charlotte, an avid sports enthusiast and a fan of running, currently attends Lambrook School, the same school as her brothers, Prince George, 12, and Prince Louis, seven. According to sources cited by the magazine, she’s expected to remain there until age 13.

Melanie Sanderson, Editorial Director of The Good Schools Guide, said Wellington could be a potential option for Princess Charlotte, noting that royal families may sometimes hold places at more than one school.

Sanderson also noted that Wellington is just a 15-minute drive from the Wales family home in Windsor and is a coeducational school.
