A new Walt Disney Imagineering video takes a behind-the-scenes look at the Tohan Lege “hologram” utilized in the Star Wars fireworks and projection shows at Disneyland.
Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Hologram
The character of Tohan Lege was created just for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and introduces “Shadows of Memory: A Skywalker Saga” (projections only) and “Fire of the Rising Moons” (projections and fireworks) on select nights. The fireworks show is a unique view of the nightly Disneyland fireworks from inside Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge with Star Wars music and projections on the land’s spires.
Tohan Lege appears as a hologram projected by his droid, Bard. Though Lege has long since passed, Bard keeps his memory and story alive.
Holograms as seen in the Star Wars universe don’t really exist in our world. Disney managed to replicate the effect with Rey inside Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, but Lege’s hologram outdoors presented a bigger challenge.
As Imagineer Hunter explains in the video below, the Tohan Lege hologram is created thanks to a haze screen (an invisible screen of mist) and a “pop up” — an eight-foot curved projection screen that raises in two seconds. Combined with perfectly timed lighting and projection, these elements make a flickering image of Lege on the balcony above guests.
