Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis have named a new baby kangaroo being cared for at an Australian zoo.

The young royals teamed up with Robert Irwin, son of the late conservationist Steve Irwin, to name the new joey being cared for at Australia Zoo. I

n a post shared to social media, Robert said: “Introducing Cwtch, the newest member of the Australia Zoo family, a gorgeous eastern grey kangaroo joey.”

Presenter Irwin added said “Cwtch, which is Welsh for cuddle” was the “absolute perfect name” because “at this age they love a cuddle and spend most of their time inside that pouch with their mum.”

Irwin, who manages Australia Zoo in Queensland and is an ambassador for Prince William’s Earthshot Prize, continued: “I want to say a particular thank you to Prince George, Prince Louis and Princess Charlotte for your help in finding this little one a brilliant name.”

He posted a video of the announcement on Instagram: “Look out for Cwtch on your next visit to @‌australiazoo, and support their vital conservation efforts to protect Australia’s wildlife and wild places.”

George visited Australia with his parents on a royal tour in 2014 when he was a baby and met a bilby called George at Taronga Zoo in Sydney.

Irwin was surrounded by sweet kangaroos before speaking about how vital the animals are to Australia’s ecosystem. The animals are credited with maintaining grassland health and reducing fire risk by keeping grass levels low.

Many people online praised Irwin and gushed over the young joey. One said: “Aww, this is so adorable. Gorgeous kangaroos, especially Cwtch, what a cutie.” Another added: “Aww, Cwtch is so cute. I love that ‘The Wales Family’ picked this name for this sweet kangaroo.”

A third commented: “Would love to see the Wales Family go on holiday this summer to your amazing wildlife sanctuary.” A fourth said: “That’s so cool you let the royal family’s kids name the joey. Welcome to the world Cwtch.”
