The long-awaited sequel to the widely popular action sci-fi film starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt seems far from becoming a reality. Over the years, multiple reports suggested some movement, though there were occasional discouraging updates as well. However, the follow-up has never been officially greenlit. A recent rumor brought renewed attention to the feature, claiming it was close to entering production. However, a new report suggests that it isn’t the case.

New report says Edge of Tomorrow 2 isn’t in active development

Edge of Tomorrow 2 reportedly isn’t in active development as of May 2026. This debunks a recent rumor from a familiar industry scooper, Daniel RPK, who claimed it was moving forward and that filming could start in the fall. It also shoots down Production Weekly’s report, which also suggested the same (via CBR).

Collider recently shared the disappointing update. However, they countered it with an encouraging one, revealing Warner Bros. Pictures still planned to make it in the future. The outlet added, “While the project is not officially dead, it’s not exactly alive either. The cast and director Doug Liman have all been linked to the potential follow-up over the years, but fans shouldn’t expect cameras to roll anytime soon.”

A year ago, Doug Liman, who helmed the original, suggested that the follow-up was possible. He noted that Warner Bros. frequently brought up the possibility. Liman shared with Total Film, “I do think there’s probably no better compliment to a movie than people wanting for there to be a sequel. Road House – there’s call for a sequel. Edge of Tomorrow, there’s no better compliment than Warner Bros. constantly bringing up, ‘Will you go and make another one of these?’” (via Games Radar).

Edge of Tomorrow premiered in theaters in 2014, but it performed below expectations at the box office, grossing only approximately $370 million against its reported $178 million budget. However, it garnered a positive critical reception, as reflected in its impressive 91% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

In addition to Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, the movie features Bill Paxton, Brendan Gleeson, and Noah Taylor, among others.
