Sydney Sweeney is cosigning the return of the ‘90s and Noughties-era butterfly top in an upcoming episode of Euphoria. Originally championed by pop culture tastemaker Mariah Carey, the barely-there trend has since been co-opted by stars like Hailey Bieber, Dua Lipa, and Tyla. For her character Cassie Howard’s latest arc from Only Fans creator to aspiring actress, Sweeney sparkles in a beaded denim butterfly top held together by a single piece of string as she delivers an unexpected monologue.
In a sneak preview video that the Anyone But You star reposted on her Instagram Stories on May 8, she can be seen paying homage to Carey as she auditions for an “L.A. Nights” show. Like the “Fantasy” singer, Sweeney appeared to wear a long dark-wash jean skirt with her matching denim butterfly top, which featured a plunging neckline and a strategically-placed bodice that resembled a butterfly with its wings covering her chest and midriff. The star’s top was bedazzled with gold beads, adding some molten shine to the all-denim look.

As she delivered a striking monologue from Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra for the casting directors, Sweeney’s Cassie showed off her new bleach-blonde bombshell curls and middle-parted curtain bangs. She accentuated her features with a moody navy blue smoky eyeshadow and a dark mauve lipstick.

The Syrn founder has been the subject of controversy for Cassie’s Euphoria story line this season, including posing in dog and baby-inspired lingerie costumes in an attempt to pay for her expensive floral wedding arrangements—as well as the significant debt that her husband Nate Jacobs has accrued.

Off-screen, Sweeney is currently filming the live-action Gundam film opposite Noah Centineo in Australia after promoting her Syrn lingerie line pop-up at Stagecoach music festival. The star, who hard-launched her relationship with Scooter Braun after the Indio, California event, showed she and the music exec are only getting more serious as they were photographed together in Queensland on Friday afternoon. Holding hands with Braun as they headed onto a private plane, Sweeney ditched her signature Old Hollywood curls, instead styling her shoulder-length blonde hair in two French braids.
