The Devil Wears Prada 2 has followed up its excellent $233 million opening weekend (the second-biggest of the year to date) with a strong hold in its second weekend, meaning it’s already strutted past the original movie at the box office.
After dropping only 44% at the US box office, the celebrated sequel added $43 million in the US and $75 million internationally to stand at a brilliant $433.2 million worldwide after only 10 days of release. It’s already the fifth highest-grossing movie of the year, behind The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Project Hail Mary, Pegasus 3 and Michael.
The performance to date means The Devil Wears Prada 2 has sailed past the first movie’s final $326.6 million result. It’s not a surprise that the sequel has outgrossed the original, given it was released 20 years ago and the result is not adjusted for inflation, but it is impressive how quickly it’s surpassed it.

While it’s performed well at the US box office, the sequel has done especially good business outside of the US, with $288 million to date. Its biggest markets so far at the UK and Italy, where it’s taken $28 million in each, with decent returns in Brazil ($22 million) and Mexico ($20 million).
The Devil Wears Prada 2’s terrific box-office performance is likely to lead to more calls for a third movie, something that returning director David Frankel isn’t ruling out having learnt his lesson from the first movie.
“Look, it took us 20 years to do this one. And I said, ‘Never again’, and here we are. So, I certainly would never say, ‘Never again’, again. Let’s see what happens,” he told Variety ahead of the movie’s second weekend of release.
“If there was an opportunity to revisit the characters and to share a few months with these wonderful actors again, obviously, I’d love it.”

It’s something that’s echoed by the returning cast who, for understandable reasons, hope that they don’t have to wait 20 years for. “I don’t think we can do it in another 20 years. We have to do it sooner than that, because I’ll be dead,” joked Stanley Tucci.
Anne Hathaway added: “I hope so, I feel like there’s more road to explore. But, we’ll probably have a better idea of that [when the film comes out].”
Safe to say, they have a “better idea” now that the fan demand is still there for this world, so don’t be surprised to see The Devil Wears Prada 3 in the future.
