One bit of sad news out of Amazon’s upfront presentation is that they have confirmed what was already known – that the upcoming live-action “Voltron” movie won’t be going theatrical.
According to GVN, the Henry Cavill-led title is still planning to make its debut on Prime Video as an original where the company likely hopes it will become a “Road House,” “Coming 2 America” or “The Tomorrow War” sized hit.
Amazon has made big strides in their theatrical push in the last year or so, but this was reportedly always intended for a straight-to-streaming release in 2026. No marketing material has been released thus far beyond a logo.
Sterling K. Brown, Daniel Quinn-Toye, Rita Ora, John Kim, Alba Baptista, Samson Kayo and Tharanya Tharan star in the project which is based on the classic 1980 mecha anime series.
The original show followed five young space pilots in a battalion named the Robot Lions. Those vehicles are able to join together to form a mega robot known as Voltron. The film is expected to focus on a new generation of pilots.
Rawson Marshall Thurber is directing from a screenplay he wrote with Ellen Shanman. Todd Lieberman, Bob Koplar and David Hoberman are producing. Filming took place in Australia throughout the first half of 2025.
