God’s Creatures, the “masterpiece” Irish drama starring Paul Mescal and Emily Watson, has just landed a new streaming home in the UK.
Released in 2022, the film stars Mescal as Brian, a young man who returns to his home in a remote fishing village in Ireland after moving to Australia. When Brian is accused of sexual assault, his mother, Aileen (Watson), lies for him, and his family and the close-knit community are torn apart.
Co-directed by Saela Davis and Anna Rose Holmer, the film marked Paul Mescal’s first major film role after his breakout performance in the television series Normal People. His starring role in Aftersun premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2022, the same month as God’s Creatures.

What did the critics say about God’s Creatures?
God’s Creatures was popular among critics and has a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 98 reviews. Although high, it is Mescal’s fourth-highest-rated movie overall, behind All of Us Strangers, Aftersun, and The Lost Daughter.
In the film’s trailer, W Magazine is cited as calling it “an affecting, clear-eyed masterpiece”.
“It’s bleak and understated, but strong performances and a thorny moral maze give this considerable power despite the gloomy skies,” said Empire Magazine.
The Wrap added of the film: “Holmer and Davis demonstrate a remarkable control over tone, performance and visual and aural storytelling, applying their sensibility to the taut, perfectly structured script by Shane Crowley.”
