London | The late Queen pushed for her son, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, to be given a high-profile role as British trade envoy, an ultimately disastrous appointment that embarrassed both the royal family and the UK government and indirectly led to the arrest of the first royal in 400 years.

    As a tranche of documents was released about the process behind the former Duke of York’s 2001 appointment, the current government confirmed that no vetting was conducted into his suitability for the role.
