Stephen Colbert spoke about his wife, Evelyn McGee Colbert, in a new interview with People—and whether they ever get into fights.
“No, we don’t really fight,” he said. “We don’t really have Donnybrooks.”
The pair have been married since 1993.
Stephen Colbert has said goodbye to The Late Show, and now, he’s reflecting on the people in his life who matter most. In a new interview with People, the 62-year-old host opened up about his marriage to his wife, Evelyn McGee Colbert, 62, and whether they ever get into fights.

He shared that most of their quibbles are about things like, “Did you not read my email that I sent you? We’ve got to make some decisions about whatever it is.” But also adds, “No, we don’t really fight. We don’t really have Donnybrooks.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Colbert gushed about Evelyn, whom he’s been married to since 1993.
“She’s great company,” he said. “I try to be equally good company. I don’t think I am as good company as she is. We laugh a lot. She’s the best laugh. She’s the laugh I want to get more than anybody else. That’s the best.”

He also discussed their early dates. Colbert said that after they met in May 1990, they wrote each other letters for months until their first date on December 26, 1990.
“Day after Christmas, Feast of Saint Stephen, so that’s auspicious,” he said. “And then we didn’t see each other again until February, I think it was around February 11th or February 9th. I know that Monday was the day before Mardi Gras, and I knew I would not see her again until Good Friday, and so I gave up Evie McGee for Lent.”
They were engaged two years later, on December 22, 1992.

“I was going to wait until December 26th, but my friend Scott Weary, he said, ‘No, man, you got to ask her before Christmas, because she’s going to want to show that ring on Christmas morning to everybody at church,’ and I said, ‘You’re absolutely right.’ So December 22nd.”
The couple now shares three kids: Madeleine, 30, Peter, 28, and John, 24.
