Avengers: Doomsday has put together a massive cast of returning characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and beyond, but there may be even more superheroes featured in the film than the dozens we already know about.

Alan Cumming is one of the actors coming back from the X-Men films, reprising the role of Nightcrawler for the first time since 2003’s X2: X-Men United. He is joined by a few of his fellow co-stars from the 20th Century Fox movies, including Patrick Stewart as Professor Charles Xavier and Ian McKellen as Magneto.

In a video interview with Deadline, Cumming revealed that there are characters in Doomsday that the filmmakers wanted to keep under wraps during filming, seemingly hinting at surprises to come.

“Going back to it after all these years was great because I really liked the character,” he said, adding: “Also this film is like, it’s superhero soup. There’s so many of them in it, I just can’t keep up.

“Also, they’re really hard scripts to read, superhero films, because it’s all action and then the names. Everyone’s got two names, you know.

“And sometimes there were secret names in it because they didn’t want to let out this certain character was coming back, so they called them somebody else in the script. It was so confusing.”

Of course, it’s entirely possible that characters that Marvel wanted to keep secret during filming have since been announced, but given how the studio loves its surprises, we should probably expect a few unannounced characters to turn up.

Also in the interview, Cumming briefly touched upon the tumultuous filming of X2 – something that has been discussed multiple times over the years – stating that: “There were things that happened on that set that were shocking to me.”

He explained how he had a much more positive experience this time around.

“I really liked the people. The brothers who directed it. And everyone was so nice”, he said.

“And we shot it at Pinewood and I’ve got to do another bit of filming on it. You know, I’m not doing it very much, but I really had fun and it was a nice thing to go back to.”

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to be released on 18 December 2026.
