Fans of the 28 Years Later movies may soon be willing. If all goes well, the third entry in the planned trilogy is really happening.
We say “if” because Danny Boyle—director of the first Years and this next one—said “fingers crossed” about it going into production. As he recently told JoBlo, everyone’s all in on it, and the trilogy’s writer Alex Garland “has a wonderful script” ready. But the team couldn’t shoot it after the prior two films because they “literally ran out of time.” The new entry has to be shot in a part of Britain “where you can only film at certain times of the year,” a tease that probably already has some fans excited.
The fate of 28 Years Later 3 has been in limbo since 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple this past January. It reviewed well, but underperformed financially because its release was impacted by a winter storm that month and coming out just seven months after its predecessor. Sony seemed committed to completing the trilogy and ensuring Cillian Murphy would bring it all home, but it’s nice to have full confirmation. And as a bonus, the time between Bone and this third movie gives the filmmakers some cover for Alfie Williams’ Spike being a full teenager when we see him next.
