Watching the finals, you’re probably aware of the celebrity row with the Knicks. You’ve got Kylie Jenner, Chuck D. We might even see our president, but the San Antonio Spurs actually have a much more homegrown audience, including the most popular celebrities: the Salesian Sisters of St. John Bosco. The nuns you see in Spurs jerseys are among their biggest fans. This actually has been going back far, far more than the last month. They actually began writing to Gregg Popovich back when he was coaching the Spurs about 10, 15 years ago. And what began as just an initial correspondence has turned into years of fandom, years of support, mutual support. This moment is special for them because they love basketball. They want to help their community. They want to connect with young people, and they realize that basketball is more than just a sport. This is a way for them to promote their values of peace, love, living a life of virtue and having fun enjoying a game. I mean, these women are serious about basketball. They can dribble, they can shoot and they’re hoping their team can win. But most importantly, they are hoping that basketball can help promote peace and love.
