An unsuspecting network of underground caves in East Devon has been thrust into the spotlight after featuring in the newly released fantasy blockbuster ‘Masters of the Universe’.

Beer Quarry Caves, near Seaton were transformed into an otherworldly set for the big-budget production starring Jared Leto, Idris Elba and Nicholas Galitzine.

The cast and crew spent time in Devon filming as the historic caves were reimagined as part of the magical world of Eternia.

Directed by Travis Knight, ‘Masters of the Universe’ is a remake of the 1982 film of the same name and follows a young man who discovers a secret legacy as the prince of an alien planet, and must recover a magic sword and return home to protect his kingdom.

To perfectly create the magical setting of the movie, film crews chose the 2,000-year-old network of caves in East Devon which hosts a mighty hall of vaulted roofs and pillars made of beer stone, which have been likened to an underground cathedral.

Sharon Ryan, Film Officer at Devon Film Office said: “We’re thrilled that the Masters of the Universe team recognised Devon’s potential as a filming location; it’s a real win for the county, helping to put us on the map as a film-friendly destination. And, given the success of the shoot, it’s proof that Devon not only has brilliant locations, but the infrastructure is also in place to host productions at any scale. He-Man is an iconic character and Beer Caves an equally iconic location – we’re excited to celebrate the film’s release into the world!”

The film also featured other South West locations including Wookey Hole and Wells Cathedral in Somerset.

Cllr Nick Hookway, East Devon District Council Portfolio Holder for Tourism and Culture, said: “We were delighted to see ‘Masters of the Universe’ filming at Beer Quarry Caves, one of East Devon’s most distinctive and atmospheric locations. Hosting a major international production like this is a fantastic opportunity to showcase our area to a global audience and highlight the unique landscapes and heritage that make East Devon such a special place. We are proud to welcome the screen industry to our district and recognise the positive contribution that productions can make to local communities, from supporting local businesses to raising the profile of the area as a visitor destination.”

‘Masters of the Universe’ was released in cinemas on June 3.
