Despite recent scandals surrounding them and their parents, sisters Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie attended June 6’s royal wedding.

Princess Anne’s son, Peter Phillips, married Harriet Sperling in a private ceremony attended by a handful of royals.

Prince William’s warm greeting towards Beatrice spoke volumes about where the sisters stand with the royal family.

When it comes to the relationship between Prince William and his cousin Princess Beatrice, a warm greeting at the royal wedding last weekend spoke volumes.

The Prince of Wales and Beatrice were two of the roughly 150 guests at the wedding of Princess Anne’s son, Peter Phillips, and pediatric nurse Harriet Sperling on June 6 at All Saints’ Church in Kemble. As members of the royal family arrived at the private ceremony, William and Beatrice were photographed together, the future king giving his cousin a kiss on the cheek.

Beatrice’s husband, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, was also in attendance, as was her sister, Princess Eugenie, and her husband, Jack Brooksbank. The sisters’ parents, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah Ferguson, were reportedly not invited to the nuptials amid ongoing scandal surrounding them both regarding their connection to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

At the wedding, Eugenie—who is expecting her third child this summer—wore a navy Gabriela Hearst dress, an overcoat, and a hat by Sarah Cant. Beatrice wore a green floral dress by Emilia Wickstead, who also designed the bride’s wedding dress.

This was Beatrice and Eugenie’s first major public appearance with the royal family since they spent Christmas at Sandringham with their husbands last December. Just one day prior to the wedding, a new report emerged from the U.K.’s National Audit Office that showed that, despite neither being working royals, Beatrice and Eugenie have lived rent-free in royal properties for years.

Royal biographer and editor-in-chief of Majesty magazine Ingrid Seward told The Sun that William’s interactions with Beatrice and Eugenie at the royal wedding spoke volumes.

“William has known the girls all their lives,” she said. “Whatever his feelings for their father—and he has made no secret of his fury at the damage Andrew’s actions have heaped upon the monarchy—both he and Catherine have been clear on one point: the sins of the father are not the sins of the daughters.”

Former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond told The Mirror that Beatrice and Eugenie attending the wedding despite recent scandals was “quite brave.”

“Peter has always been an immensely popular member of the family, so it was no surprise to see such a big turnout of royals,” Bond said. “I thought it was quite brave of Beatrice and Eugenie to show up…knowing that the cameras would be on them.”

“They’ve had a lot of highly critical press lately, and it can’t have been easy for them to face the media,” she continued. “But they did seem to keep quite a low profile, particularly as the bridal party left the church. I’m sure they were determined not to draw any of the limelight from the bride and groom, who looked incredibly happy and relaxed together.”

She added that the wedding “was a much needed joyful day for the family, and a chance to show that they—or at least most of them—remain united in spite of all the damaging headlines of recent times.”
