Tip Toe aired its concluding episode tonight, leaving Channel 4 viewers utterly devastated.

From the outset, Channel 4’s Tip Toe has been dropping glimpses of a flash forward hinting at a savage act of violence to come, though with little indication of the specifics.

Single gay bar proprietor Leo (played by Alan Cumming) and married father and electrician Clive (David Morrissey) had lived side by side in relative harmony for the past 15 years.

However, a rapidly intensifying dispute between the two neighbours unfolds over one fateful week, culminating in a scene that nobody could have anticipated.

    Tip Toe ending explained

The harrowing chain of events in Tip Toe’s final episode kicks off after Zee (Iz Hesketh) takes Clive’s son George (Jackson Connor) for a night out in Manchester’s iconic Gay Village.

The pair gleefully drink to excess, which leads to photographs being shared of 16-year-old George sporting a striking new makeover.

The following day, George finds himself in the crosshairs of an aggressive individual named Roddy (George Miller), who is attending his brother Saul’s (Joseph Evans) football viewing party.

Zee, who has since changed her name to Flo, attempts to extract George from the drink-fuelled confrontation, though he insists he is more than capable of handling Roddy’s taunts.

Equally alarmed, Leo steps in to ensure all is well, but his intervention only serves to inflame tensions further, and moments later Clive is confronted by a series of wholly unexpected images and videos streaming on to the television.

They expose Clive’s eldest son’s online sex work and his youngest son’s evening out in the Gay Village, but he is subsequently ridiculed by the others for previously assisting an assaulted drag queen.

The group ridicules him, with Roddy implying that Clive was conducting an affair with the drag queen, serving as a trigger for what follows.

In an extreme and vicious bid to reclaim his masculinity, Clive and his gang of boisterous football-loving companions assault Leo, before fatally hanging him from a lamppost outside his residence.

While the remainder of the group flees, Clive remains there in disbelief at what they had just committed.

Channel 4 audiences have been left utterly stunned by the concluding events of Tip Toe, with numerous viewers rushing to X to voice their horror and disbelief.

“The last episode of Tip Toe is one of the most horrific things I’ve ever seen in my life. I am in bits”, someone posted.

A second commented: “They warned us right at the start. And they showed glimpses each episode.

“But really nothing could prepare for seeing the dehumanisation and the pack mentality of Clive and his footy mates that brought about the sheer horror of the final outcome. “Screaming at the TV.””

Another posted: “The last 15 minutes of #tiptoe are some of the most harrowing 15 minutes of a TV drama I’ve seen for quite some time (if ever).”

Someone else on X characterised it as “terrifying” and a “devastating wake up call.”

Reddit users also shared their reactions with one fan commenting: “I am shocked, it is amazing, traumatic and mentally scarring… this show is still amazing, though mentally and emotionally challenging to almost breaking point for me.”

Another viewer remarked: “I have no idea how I’ll be able to unwind enough to sleep tonight.”

However, Tip Toe doesn’t conclude there as a sequence of text discloses what subsequently happened to everyone.

It reveals that the majority of those implicated in Leo’s death are found guilty as accomplices to murder and handed sentences of up to 10 years, though on appeal these are reduced to four or five.

Roddy receives a life sentence and Clive a mandatory life sentence.

It continues to detail that Marie Goss (Pooky Quesnel), George and Saul relocate to Whitby, then Scotland and adopt new surnames.

“George is always in trouble. Drops out of university. A lot of convictions for drug-related offences”, the text reads.

In contrast, “Saul thinks his life is over. But then he meets a lovely woman called Annie”, with whom he fathers three children.

In other developments, “Zee chooses the name Sarah and becomes a teacher” and “Melba gets blind drunk on this day, for the rest of his life.”

Spit and Polish is passed down to Leo’s former partner Curtis (Charlie Condou) who sells it and it transforms into a pizzeria.

The closing caption disturbingly states: “And Leo’s story isn’t over. It keeps changing.

“Within 18 months, a search for his name says: Leo Struthers, convicted paedophile.”

Tip Toe is available to watch on Channel 4.
