The Man Who Knew Infinity, the “excellent” British historical drama starring Toby Jones, has just landed a new streaming home in the UK. Released theatrically in 2016, the film sees Dev Patel portray Srinivasa Ramanujan, a brilliant East Indian mathematician.

Set in 1913, the film follows Srinivasa as he travels to the University of Cambridge’s Trinity College to work with professor G H Hardy, played by Jeremy Irons. While there, he has to “navigate the labyrinth of academia and racial prejudice”.

Jones plays mathematician John Edensor Littlewood, a colleague and collaborator of Hardy. He is joined in the cast by Devika Bhise, Stephen Fry, Jeremy Northam, Kevin McNally, Arundhati Nag and Shazad Latif, among others.

Written and directed by Matthew Brown, the period film was added to Netflix in the UK on Thursday (11 June), so subscribers can watch it now. It is also available on HBO Max in the UK, giving you another option.

The film proved popular with audiences and currently holds a rating of 7.2/10 on IMDb from 67,000 logs, with users praising Patel’s performance. On Rotten Tomatoes, the historical drama has an approval rating of 62% from 129 reviews.

“It’s also nice to see Dev Patel in yet another excellent film, as this young man seems to have a real knack for picking film projects… As for Irons, he is, as usual, amazing… as is Toby Jones,” wrote one user on IMDb.

“There is an underlying message to this story, and whether you’re a man of science or metaphysics or spirituality, you will find satisfaction! Patel and Irons did a splendid job in this film,” penned another.

Another user said of the film: “More surprisingly, Dev Patel – after a series of exuberant but lightweight performances – finally proves to be an actor with some depth and range. The film is also deftly directed, with some gorgeous cinematography.”

“So beautifully directed, enthralling from the very first cut. This is so far the finest performance by Dev Patel… Not a film to watch for the entertainment value only but solely for the essence of film watching,” wrote another.
