It was recently revealed that James May failed a driving test remake, but did you know five other celebrities who also came unstuck at the wheel?

The 63-year-old, who fronted BBC’s Top Gear from 2003 until 2015 before moving to Prime Video’s The Grand Tour until 2024, recently discovered he would not pass today’s exam after attempting a modern driving test for a YouTube video.

Both motoring shows saw him present alongside Richard Hammond and Oxfordshire farmer Jeremy Clarkson, who owns Diddly Squat Farm and The Farmer’s Dog pub near Burford.

Mr May, who brought his live theatre show Explorers: The Age of Discovery to Oxford’s New Theatre for a one-night date last year, has now joined a long list of famous faces who initially failed to get their licence.

Singer Harry Styles has previously admitted he did not pass his practical driving test at the first attempt, saying he was a bag of nerves as a teenage learner.

Fellow chart‑topper Ed Sheeran has also spoken about struggling with his test, recalling that he needed more than one go before examiners finally signed off his driving.

Hollywood star Robert Pattinson has told interviewers he failed his first test too, despite later becoming known for high‑octane roles in blockbuster films.

Oscar-nominated actress Carey Mulligan is among the other big names who have confessed to early mishaps at the test centre before eventually passing.

Model and TV personality Cara Delevingne has likewise joked about multiple failed efforts, saying the attention that comes with fame only made the experience more intimidating.

For Mr May, the recent mock exam does not affect his real‑world driving licence, but his slip‑up underlines that even experienced motorists – and global celebrities – can falter when faced with the pressure and stricter standards of a modern test.
