    Best movie new to Netflix this week

    1917: A one-shot wonder from Bond director Sam Mendes, this 2019 drama takes place during World War I and follows two young soldiers as they traverse no man’s land to deliver a message to call off a doomed attack.

    George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman lead the cast as the two central characters, while the star-studded supporting cast includes Colin Firth, Benedict Cumberbatch, Andrew Scott, Richard Madden and Mark Strong.

    1917 drew huge acclaim from critics, with the London Evening Standard calling it “thrilling”, while it went on to win three technical Oscars.

    Best movie new to Prime Video this week

    Catch Me If You Can: If you’ve caught Disclosure Day and are in the mood for more Steven Spielberg classics, then you can’t go wrong with this gem featuring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks.

    Boasting a near-perfect 96% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, the story follows con artist Frank Abagnale Jr as he fakes his way through identities including a Pan Am pilot and a doctor, all while being pursued by the FBI.

    The impressive cast also includes Christopher Walken, Amy Adams, Martin Sheen, James Brolin and Nathalie Baye.

    Best movie new to BBC iPlayer this week

    Queer: Daniel Craig leads this acclaimed 2024 drama, which is based on the novella by writer William S Burroughs.

    The story follows an American expatriate in 1950s Mexico City, who becomes infatuated with a younger man (played by Drew Starkey) and tries to establish an intimate connection.

    Queer, which was described as a “beautiful, filthy, extraordinary take” on the source material by Rolling Stone, comes from director Luca Guadagnino, who has also helmed Call Me by Your Name and Challengers.

    Best movie new to ITVX this week

    God’s Own Country: This powerful queer drama was called “seminal” by them., and sits at an impressive 98% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

    Josh O’Connor leads as sheep farmer Johnny, whose frustrations are channeled into drinking and casual sex. However, his life is upended by the arrival of Romanian migrant worker Gheorghe (Alec Secăreanu), whom he develops an intimate relationship with.

    The role proved to be O’Connor’s breakout back in 2017, while other supporting cast includes Gemma Jones and Ian Hart.

    Best movie new to Channel 4 this week

    Knives Out: Another top-tier Daniel Craig movie, this time the Bond actor brilliantly shows off his comic chops as the now-iconic Southern detective Benoit Blanc.

    The first Knives Out caper sees the character investigate the death of a bestselling crime author (Christopher Plummer), as he looks into his close family for clues, aided by the late writer’s nurse Marta (Ana de Armas).

    Kicking off the franchise’s penchant for impressive ensemble casts, the movie also stars Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Toni Collette, Don Johnson, LaKeith Stanfield and Katherine Langford.
