BBC thriller Nightsleeper is set to return to screens for a second season – but with a new mode of transportation this time. Debuting in 2024, the show’s first run takes place on a sleeper train between Glasgow and London.

However, when hackers take control and send it hurtling towards potential tragedy, a race against time ensues to stop the train.

The BBC said it was the biggest new drama launch of that year, with the first episode reaching 8.5 million viewers – and in the wake of its success, a second has now been confirmed.

In the upcoming six-part season, the premise “moves from the rails to the open water”, with the “high-stakes thriller” taking place on a ship traversing the Irish Sea, where “behind every cabin door is another story, another surprise”.

Nightsleeper begins rolling cameras later this year in Belfast and is once again written by Nick Leather, who said it was “so exciting to set sail on season two”.

“The passengers and crew on tonight’s Belfast to Liverpool passenger ferry are about to experience six hours of non-stop thrills and spills, secrets and lies, triumphs and tragedies,” he teased.

“None of them are quite as they seem. Nothing in their lives will ever be the same again. Not all of them will make it to the other side. The new Nightsleeper is going to be more nightsleepery than ever….”

Executive producer Kate Harwood added: “Audiences embraced Nightsleeper in such a huge way, and we’re incredibly excited to return with a bold new story.

“Nick has once again created a brilliantly tense thriller packed with new characters, twists, emotion and edge-of-your-seat drama. We can’t wait to bring this new drama from the high seas.”

The first season stars Peaky Blinders’ Joe Cole and Killing Eve’s Alexandra Roach, as well as Doctor Who’s Ruth Madeley, Game of Thrones’ James Cosmo, Shameless’ David Threlfall and Bridgerton’s Katie Leung.

Nightsleeper season one is streaming on BBC iPlayer.
