Prince Harry and Meghan Markle reportedly appear to be assuming the role of “working royals” again.
Harry, 41, and Meghan, 44, were reportedly hoping to assume a “hybrid role” between the title of working royals and private citizens, but “Queen Elizabeth said no,” per a palace source speaking to journalist Rob Shuter. The high-profile couple announced in January 2020 that they would “step back as ‘senior’ members” of the Royal Family before moving to California.
Harry and Meghan’s ambiguous position with the Royal Family comes as the pair prepare to return to England in July with their children, marking their first visit as a complete family since the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022.
An insider close to the Royals alleged to Shuter that Meghan and Harry may not be working royals, but “they’re receiving many of the benefits that come with being working royals.”
Harry has expressed concerns about his wife and children’s safety ahead of their return to the UK and is hoping to have his taxpayer-funded security reinstated despite his non-working status. He’s faced a lengthy legal battle with the British government as he seeks protection for his family.

In the wake of security difficulties, Harry’s father, King Charles III, extended an invitation for the family to stay at a royal residence, believed to be Buckingham Palace. While Harry initially denied the offer, he has now reportedly accepted.
An insider alleged that “Charles is a father before he is a king when it comes to Harry. He wants peace, he wants unity and he wants a relationship with his grandchildren.”
The monarch’s grandchildren, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, have not visited the UK since 2022.
The King will reportedly “want to see” Meghan, with whom he once shared an “extremely close relationship.”
“If it happens, I think it will be a very special and emotional reunion. They have a lot in common and a lot of respect for each other, so I imagine they will both want to reconnect,” said former royal butler Grant Harrold.

However, as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex look to return to the UK, Harry’s brother William is reportedly less-than-pleased. The Prince of Wales is allegedly steadfast in not forgiving Harry for accusing the Royal family of alleged racism. In 2021, Meghan shared that the “firm,” a term used to refer to the Royals, had “concerns and conversations about how dark [their son Prince Archie’s] skin was going to be when he was born.”
Harry added, “That conversation, I’m never going to share. It was awkward and I was a bit shocked.”
An insider further spoke on the Royal Family’s alleged current conflict, saying that “Charles wants reconciliation. William wants accountability.” While Charles may be “getting his way” at the moment, the source noted that “everyone knows the future belongs to William.” As the first-born child of King Charles and Queen Elizabeth II, William is first in line for the British throne.
