DIY SOS star Nick Knowles, who is a familiar face on our TV screens, said he will “disappear” as he shared an emotional personal update. The TV star will be taking a break to care for his wife Katie, who recently underwent emergency surgery.

The couple started dating in 2021 after they met when their children became friends at a play centre. They got engaged in 2023 and tied the knot on June 7 last year at Braxted Park, Essex.

The 36-year-old lingerie entrepreneur was rushed to hospital when her cervix ruptured following a hysterectomy, just weeks after their wedding, reports The Express.

Now, Katie, has been told she needs another major operation, and Nick has decided he will stay at home to care for her.

Nick, 63, told the Daily Mail he needed to “disappear” for a while. He said: “I’ve been looking after my wife a lot because she has been through it. She’s had a lot of tough times. She’s got another operation coming up.”

Katie underwent a hysterectomy last summer after “years of pain” from battling polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis and adenomyosis. But 12 weeks into her recovery, the stitches in Katie’s cervix ruptured, and left her with “crippling abdominal pains”.

Describing the experience as “the most terrifying day I’ve ever had,” Katie shared images of herself in hospital. She said: “The bit where they took my cervix and sealed it up ruptured, which basically meant my insides went rogue, with crippling abdominal pains, difficulty breathing, incredibly painful gas, blood like Moses parting the Red Sea, fluid, and even my bowel where it definitely didn’t belong.”

Katie added: ”Saturday when it happened I was in so much pain I couldn’t move or walk and just cried on my own on the kitchen from 2-5.30am. I nearly passed out from the pain.”

She explained that the hysterectomy had triggered early menopause, and left her very tired, but overall she had been coping fairly well.

She said: “I was pretty much back to normal – although I started working the day after my hysterectomy, so that clearly didn’t help.”

She took a turn for the worse and was rushed back to hospital for emergency surgery. She said: “I thought it would be lots of waiting round, but they did blood tests, a CT scan, and had me morphined up and ready for surgery in under 10 hours.

“There was talk of my bowel having been perforated, having to have open surgery and another lumbar puncture. I had every situation running through my mind and it was terrifying. They had three plans for surgery, and two of them were huge.”

While the immediate crisis was dealt with, Katie will need further surgery and her husband Nick is determined to be on hand to help as much as he can.

He said: “I will disappear for a while because I’ll be looking after her. I’m always worried [about her], but she’s a warrior and a fighter, so I know she’ll be fine.”
