Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham thinks her pointing moment at Phoenix Mercury forward DeWanna Bonner during Monday’s brouhaha that turned into an instate meme is “dumb.”
Cunningham said on her podcast Show Me Something with West Wilson that she couldn’t help herself in the viral moment that saw her silently pointing at Bonner during a two-team tango that resulted in multiple technical fouls.

“I walked out there, and I was literally talking to the ref,” Cunningham explained about the pointing moment’s origin story about asking why Fever superstar guard Cailtin Clark got a tech and not Bonner after the two got tied up and jawed at each other. “[I asked the ref,] ‘Now, Caitlin got one, but why didn’t [Bonner] get one?’ because if Caitlin’s going to get one, then she should have got one. It shouldn’t have been one or the other.
“I was just kind of pointing [at Bonner], and she’s like, ‘Don’t you point at me!’ and I was like, ‘Oop, shouldn’t have said that.’ And, I didn’t say a word…” She then started pointing at the screen to mimic the viral moment.
“That is the stupidest thing I’ve ever done,” Cunningham added. “I’m telling you; everyone’s like, ‘That is so dumb.’ I think it’s dumb, but it was pissing [Bonner] off, and I couldn’t help myself. I could not. She was losing her [expletive], and all I was doing was literally pointing.”
NSFW language to follow.
The pointing has turned into one of the biggest sports memes of the year, so it’s fascinating to hear Cunningham’s reasoning behind the point that will now live in WNBA petty lore.
When do the Fever and Mercury play again?
Thursday, July 9, in Phoenix.
