Happy Sunday, and welcome to a new edition of “This Week, In a Galaxy Far, Far Away“. Once again, I have a relatively thin column this weekend, as the Star Wars news drought continues. Disney announced this week the home release of The Devil Wears Prada 2 for July 29. I would expect a similar announcement on The Mandalorian and Grogu to come soon… perhaps targeting a Labor Day Weekend streaming debut?
Over at Star Wars News Net, things continue as usual. Josh delivered a new Character Spotlight on Rook Kast, which you can check out here. And while Tyler continues on his summer hiatus, he did post a new video chatting with Paul about The Mandalorian and Grogu, its box office, what it means for the future, and more. Check it out! As usual, make sure to join our Discord server by clicking here!
Something to watch out for: The Ninth Jedi, the spin-off series from Star Wars: Visions, will have a presence at this week’s Anime Expo, where the first episode will be screened. I would also expect a trailer and release date to come out of that panel, since we know the series is coming out this summer (maybe early August?).
With that out of the way…
Three Things That May Have Flown Casual
Starfighter craze: The countdown for Starfighter is on. Lucasfilm needs to prove that it can still release a Star Wars movie in theaters and be culturally relevant. And though I don’t expect any footage to be made public before the end of the year, it seems that Disney is already showing it off in closed-door events, as evidenced by a special appearance during CineEurope. This speaks well of the movie’s chances at D23 in August. Meanwhile, Amy Adams also confirmed what we all suspected, that her role in the movie will be rather small. However, as a guest on the Smartless podcast, she spoke highly of the movie and her on-set experience, adding that she was geeking out on the first day. “I’m on a Star Wars set, and I like, I grew up on this!” she said. I did not expect that!
Video game updates: The Star Wars: Eclipse crew is reportedly “dying a slow death”; in the latest move, a large part of Quantic Dreams’ staff is going on strike over imposed layoffs. On a more positive note, the marketing for Galactic Racer continues with a 10-minute preview for the game. Finally, a crowdfunded documentary on YouTube explored how adding Jedi doomed the old video game Star Wars Galaxies.
Publishing updates: We have a preview for Eyes Like Stars, the first in a new series of (presumably unconnected) genre-based books that is coming out on July 21. We also have a new excerpt for Edge of the Abyss, the second chapter in the Reign of the Empire trilogy that comes out in September.
There was a lot of chatter in the comments section last week, regarding my five bullet points standing as a studio mandate, which I appreciated! Let me know what’s going through your head about Star Wars, its present and future, down below!
Have a great week.
Miguel Fernández is a Spanish student that has movies as his second passion in life. His favorite movie of all time is The Lord of the Rings, but he is also a huge Star Wars fan. However, fantasy movies are not his only cup of tea, as movies from Scorsese, Fincher, Kubrick or Hitchcock have been an obsession for him since he started to understand the language of filmmaking. He is that guy who will watch a black and white movie, just because it is in black and white.
