Excitingly, though, Mollie has already secured her next role – making her professional stage debut as Clarice Starling in the UK and Ireland tour of Silence of the Lambs.

A Coronation Street spokesperson told Digital Spy: “Mollie has created a unique and well loved character in Nina over the past six and a half years and everyone will be sorry to see her go.

“It is fantastic for Mollie that she has been given this incredible opportunity to play such an iconic role and we wish her all the best for the theatre tour.”

Digital Spy understands that Mollie’s final scenes as Nina will air in late August.

The star’s new theatrical role will see her team up with Coronation Street and Emmerdale actor Oliver Farnworth, who’s playing Jack Crawford, and Skins star Sam Jackson, who’s appearing as Buffalo Bill.

As previously announced, ex-EastEnders actor John Partridge will take on the sadistic role of Dr Hannibal Lecter.

Silence of the Lambs opens at Leicester’s Curve theatre on 1 August, before travelling around the UK and Ireland until June 2027.

Mollie joined the cast of Coronation Street in late 2019, when she was introduced as Roy Cropper’s niece.

Her most memorable storyline aired in 2021, when Nina and her boyfriend Seb Franklin were brutally attacked in a hate crime. The violent incident was influenced by prejudice surrounding Nina’s alternative appearance and tragically led to Seb’s death.

That year, Mollie secured the Serial Drama Performance prize at the National Television Awards following the powerful storyline.

“I just want to dedicate this award to anyone who feels like they don’t fit the mould, or feel like they don’t belong,” Mollie said on stage at the time. “You are amazing! You are.”

Nina also had a popular relationship with Asha Alahan, but the pair split up in early 2024.

Coronation Street airs on weeknights at 8.30pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
