If you have the privilege of getting to call Lena Dunham a friend, you really should have her give a speech at your wedding. Taylor Swift took full advantage of her friendship with Dunham, getting the Girls creator to say a few words at her rehearsal dinner. According to reports, Dunham’s speech was the talk of the evening, for better or worse.
When given the mic, Dunham reportedly told the crowd of 100 guests that, “American football is just straight guys reenacting gay porn.” A source told the Daily Mail that the joke “divided” the audience, drawing both “gasps and laughs” from guests. Luckily, the only person who really mattered loved it. Swift herself reportedly called Dunham a “genius” after her speech. If I had to guess, I would bet that Travis Kelce also got a kick out of the quip.
Shout-out to Dunham for giving a fun speech that caused a bit of a scene — what is the point of being the cosmopolitan bestie of the world’s biggest pop star if you don’t add a little spice to her wedding? At the actual wedding, officiant Adam Sandler went more classic, telling the couple to “kiss every chance you get,” per Chiefs coach Andy Reid. That is fine and perhaps even sweet, but imagine what kind of bawdy wisdom or touching bon mot Dunham might have given the couple from the altar. This is the woman who gave us “When I look at both of you, a Coldplay song plays in my heart” in the Girls pilot. She should get dibs on officiating their vows renewal.
