WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – A pilot for a series based on the 2006 teen film “Aquamarine” is expected to film in Wilmington, according to a member of the production crew.
Disney+ and Disney Channel have ordered a pilot for the series, The Hollywood Reporter reported. Emma Roberts, who starred in the original movie, will guest star in the pilot as Claire Brown. Roberts is also attached as an executive producer.
The film’s director, Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum, is set to direct the pilot, written by Sarah Watson, creator of “The Bold Type,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The pilot centers on a teenager named Coral who recently moved to a seaside town and begins searching for answers about her mother’s disappearance, The Hollywood Reporter said. The show’s logline says Coral discovers her mother was a mermaid and begins developing magical powers “as secrets beneath the waves threaten to surface.”
The 2006 film starred Roberts, Joanna “JoJo” Levesque, Sara Paxton, Jake McDorman and Arielle Kebbel. In the movie, two teenage girls discover a mermaid in a swimming pool and try to help her find true love to avoid an arranged marriage.
