Christopher Nolan’s fantasy action film The Odyssey arrives in cinemas next week, adapting Homer’s epic poem onto the big screen. Set in Greece, the movie tells the story of King Odysseus as he makes the perilous journey back to Ithaca following the Trojan War.

Odysseus encounters various mythical creatures on his way back to his wife Penelope and their son Telemachus. However, during his absence, the villainous Antinous spots an opportunity to take the king’s place within his family.

The movie boasts an impressive cast, led by Matt Damon, opposite Anne Hathaway who plays Penelope. Lupita Nyong’o has a dual role as both Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra, while Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Elliot Page, Jon Bernthal and Mia Goth also star.

Robert Pattinson takes on the role of the sinister Antinous, facing off against Tom Holland’s Telemachus, who isn’t ready for a new father figure.

However, it’s not just Telemachus who dislikes the antagonist, as Pattinson described his character as “just the worst stepfather you could possibly have” in an interview with Empire.

The Odyssey marks Holland and Pattinson’s third project together, after The Lost City Of Z and The Devil All The Time. Reflecting on their on-screen history, the Batman star realised his characters always seem to have it out for Holland’s.

“I always end up doing these slithery things with Tom and I don’t know why,” he said. “This was just a fun part to play: ‘I just want to be your daddy. I want to be your daddy. That’s all I want!'”

Meanwhile, despite being taunted in the movie, Holland shared that he was happy to be reunited with Pattinson, describing him as a “safety blanket” on set.

“Having a familiar face and someone that I could share the screen with was a real safety blanket for me. I’m always eager to share scenes with Rob, because he just brings the best out of everyone.”

He added: “I admire his ability to take big swings and make them feel like the perfect decision for that character.”

The Odyssey is released in cinemas on 17 July.
