Nolan’s ancient journey with a modern lens
After chronicling the birth of the atomic bomb, Nolan is reaching much further back in time. The Odyssey adapts Homer’s epic poem, following the Greek hero Odysseus on his perilous voyage home after the Trojan War. The story has survived nearly 3,000 years, but this marks the first time Nolan has tackled ancient mythology on the big screen.
The cast may be the most impressive of his career, and Holland occupies a pivotal spot within it. The actor plays Telemachus, the son of Odysseus and Penelope, a young man forced to grow up in his father’s long absence. According to Nolan, the film is “in large part, the coming-of-age story of Telemachus,” which places considerable weight on Holland’s shoulders.

Best known as Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Holland is stepping into unfamiliar territory here, and Nolan says the shoot confirmed everything he suspected about the actor. “He brings commitment and focus to his work, which mixes raw talent with a disciplined process designed to inhabit the truth of the character,” the director explained in remarks relayed by Film Updates.

The admiration, it turns out, flows both ways. Back in April, Holland raved about his experience on set, saying he was blown away by Nolan’s technical feats during certain scenes.
