The wait is finally over! After weeks of hype and build up, the first full trailer for Tom Cruise’s latest film, “Digger,” is here.
Cruise dons thinning white hair, a beer belly, and a Southern drawl to play the titular billionaire, who is described as “the most powerful man in the world.” Except chaos breaks out when his company is involved in an ecological disaster that could spark a nuclear war and end the world.
The description sounds serious, but the tone of the trailer is firmly satirical, thanks to Oscar-winning filmmaker Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu.
“Everything changes,” Cruise’s Digger says at the beginning of the trailer. “One day you’re a cat, or a king. Next day, you’re just ashes in a box.”
Cruise is then seen doting on a crusty old white cat that is on its last legs.
At first dismissive after learning one of his products has caused a glacier to drastically shift, things kick into gear after Digger is asked by the U.S. President, played by John Goodman, to fix the mess.
Riz Ahmed, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde and Emma D’Arcy also star in the film.
“I have never had something that could challenge me in this way, and neither has Alejandro,” Cruise told Variety.
The “Mission: Impossible” star had long wanted to work with Iñárritu, so when the director pitched him the idea seven years ago, he was immediately on board.
“There’s nothing better than to physically and metaphorically stand on the edge of a cliff and go, ‘Let’s do this. And I trust you, and whatever we’re going to do, I know this is going to be a hell of an experience,’” Cruise said.
“Digger” is in theaters October 2.
