While it’s easy to idolize our favorite celebrities, at the end of the day, they become important parts of our lives, whether through music, film, or television. We all know just how painful it is when one of our favorites passes away, and I’ve cried numerous times over the years when a celebrity’s death feels like it hits close to home. From tragic accidents to unusual circumstances, here are 20 times we’ve had to say goodbye to a celebrity after a surprising death:1. Kobe Bryant was a five-time NBA champ. His 20-year career with the LA Lakers is legendary, but his life came to an abrupt end on January 26, 2020. Bryant, along with his daughter Gianna and seven other passengers, was killed in a helicopter crash along a mountain in Calabasas, CA. While fans still mourn his passing, his “Mamba Mentality” continues to live on.2. Paul Walker had several film roles early in his career, but he quickly rose to fame with the Fast and the Furious franchise. As the films grew in popularity, so did everyone’s love of car culture. On November 30, 2013, Walker was a passenger in a Porsche Carrera GT after leaving a charity event. The vehicle crashed, and he was tragically killed at the age of 40. Since then, the Fast film franchise family has continued to pay homage to his character, with tributes from the cast and crew and numerous posts in his memory by Vin Diesel.

3. Naya Rivera was an actor and singer widely known for her portrayal of the character Santana Lopez on Glee. Her acting career took off, soon followed by a music career that included a record deal with Columbia Records. During an afternoon swim on Lake Piru, Rivera accidentally drowned after assisting her young son back onto their boat. She passed on July 8, 2020, at the age of 33.

4. Robin Williams ruled the ’90s with his comedic charm and numerous acting roles. From Aladdin to Jumanji, he had the unique ability to give us straight laughs and also touching drama in films, like his Oscar-winning role in Good Will Hunting. Williams was found on August 11, 2014, and pronounced dead as a result of suicide. He was only 63 years old.

5. Actor Chadwick Boseman became the face of Black Panther in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. What many didn’t know was that he was privately battling colon cancer. Boseman passed away at 43 on August 28, 2020. Fans and fellow celebrities shared numerous tributes in his honor, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was dedicated to him.

6. British actor Natasha Richardson had an extensive filmography. From rom-coms like The Parent Trap to dramas like Haven, she worked alongside some of Hollywood’s biggest names. During a family ski trip to Quebec, Canada, on March 16, 2009, Natasha injured her head when she fell on a beginner’s trail. She later died on March 18, 2009, as a result of an epidural hematoma. She was 45 when she passed.

7. Heath Ledger was skyrocketing toward stardom when he passed suddenly in 2008. Initially gaining attention in the teen rom-com 10 Things I Hate About You, Heath set the world on fire with his portrayal as The Joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. His death was determined to be the result of “acute intoxication” from the various medications he was taking at the time. He was only 28 years old at the time of his death.

8. Disney Channel star Cameron Boyce was well-known for his roles in Jessie and TheDescendants film franchise. A multitalented child actor, he enjoyed a career that allowed him to star alongside major talents like Adam Sandler. He suffered from epilepsy, which is what contributed to a seizure that led to his passing on July 6, 2019, at the age of 20.

9. Music legend Michael Jackson broke numerous records throughout his history-making career. On June 25, 2009, at the age of 50, he was found unresponsive in his bedroom and later pronounced dead. Later investigations ruled his death to be a homicide as a result of acute propofol intoxication, and his physician, Conrad Murphy, was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter.

10. Singer Aaliyah was a chart-topping performer whose career helped shape R&B and pop with hits like Rock the Boat. Her life was cut short by a plane crash after filming a music video for the popular song on August 25, 2001. Investigators believe the aircraft that she and the other passengers were in was overweight due to filming equipment, causing the plane to crash shortly after takeoff. Aaliyah was 22 years old.

11. Iconic rapper Tupac Shakur took the hip-hop world by storm in the late ’80s and ’90s. With several albums and singles that rose to the top of the music charts, his notoriety was hard to ignore. After attending a boxing match at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on September 7, 1996, Tupac was shot multiple times in a drive-by shooting. He died in the hospital several days later.

12. 1950’s actor James Dean started his career with small roles in Hollywood before finding fame for his leading roles in East of Eden and Rebel Without a Cause. His sudden death came as a result of a high-speed car crash in which his Porsche crashed into an oncoming vehicle. He was 24 at the time of his passing.

13. Natalie Wood, who also starred in Rebel Without a Cause, was a Hollywood icon with numerous film credits and awards, including a Golden Globe. Natalie is believed to have drowned on November 29, 1981, while yachting near Santa Catalina Island, CA, with her husband, Robert Wagner, and their friend Christopher Walken. It remains one of Hollywood’s most infamous unsolved deaths.

14. The incredibly talented Alan Rickman was known for his chilling roles in films like Die Hard and the Harry Potter franchise. After a six-month battle with pancreatic cancer, Alan passed away on January 14, 2016. His passing shocked many fans due to the private nature of his personal life.

15. Since she was a child, Michelle Trachtenberg has graced our screens with a wide range of beloved roles (especially for millennials). From the quirky Harriet the Spy to the sneaky Georgina on Gossip Girl, she helped shape an entire generation of fans. At only 39 years old, she was found dead in her apartment in February 2025. The New York City medical examiner’s office attributed her death to diabetes complications.

16. Another influential rapper we lost too soon was The Notorious B.I.G. Representing the East Coast, Biggie Smalls helped popularize rap during the ’90s with massive hits like Juicy and Big Poppa. He was shot and killed during a drive-by shooting in Los Angeles on March 9, 1997.

17. Comedic actor Matthew Perry stole our hearts with his portrayal of Chandler Bing in Friends. His career made both him and his character household names throughout the ’90s and 2000s. On October 28, 2023, Matthew was found dead in his home in California. Investigation of his death determined that he died from a fatal ketamine overdose.

18. Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes was a member of one of the biggest all-women groups of all time, TLC. After several hit albums and some time spent as a solo artist, Lisa took some time to explore other creative endeavors. On April 25, 2002, she shockingly passed away in a car crash while on a documentary trip in Honduras.

19. Christina Grimmie was a third-place contestant on Season 6 of NBC’s The Voice in 2014. Her popularity on the competition show translated into success in the years after, and she began performing her singles live. On June 10, 2016, Christina was shot and killed by 27-year-old Kevin James Loibl at the Plaza Live venue in Orlando right after a concert with the band Before You Exit.

20. Lastly, British singer Amy Winehouse was known for her distinct sound and signature style. Her bestselling album Back to Black made her an international star in the late 2000s. While she struggled with addiction throughout her career, she had been doing relatively well in her final days. Her tragic death at the age of 27 was the result of “alcohol toxicity” during a relapse. She passed away on July 23, 2011.
