It’s a good thing Odysseus didn’t have a wristwatch to track every agonizing second of the decade he spent wandering the wine-dark sea following the siege of Troy. Then again, maybe having a Rolex Land-Dweller on his wrist would’ve been at least some comfort.
While it would’ve been apocryphal for Matt Damon’s Odyssey character to have worn any mechanical wristwear into battle, he did see fit to wear the 40mm ref. 127334 to the NYC premiere of The Odyssey. Given the cultural significance of Christopher Nolan’s films, every cast member’s sartorial-horological choice carries added weight. But even a year-plus after its 2025 debut at Watches and Wonders, the Land-Dweller is still the watch to beat.

The model is effectively Rolex’s answer to the modern luxury-sports watch craze. The design of the LD is based on the quartz-powered ref. 5100 “Texano” that debuted way back in 1970 and already featured an integrated-style bracelet two years before the debut of the Royal Oak. One could make some quip about the Land-Dweller being a hype-train watch…and it is. But so is virtually any Rolex watch, which does little to detract from the impressive qualities of the LD’s movement technology. This tech blends the best of traditional lever escapement and direct-impulse designs in a fresh, highly efficient architecture.
It wasn’t just the design but the Land-Dweller’s price that sparked conversation upon its release in 2025. The Oystersteel and white gold reference worn by Damon will set you back $16,450—though when compared to a similar time-only Royal Oak, Nautilus, or Laureato, this seems like a steal. The Land-Dweller’s design is unique among the current Rolex catalog. Its distinguished by a fluted bezel, honeycomb dial, flat Jubilee bracelet—all of which are derived from Rolex products of past decades
What’s ironic is Damon choosing this watch for this movie. The Odyssey is a tale about a dude who spent 10 years at sea, trying desperately to get home to his wife and son. Rolex offers a Sea-Dweller, and other models like the Submariner and even the Yacht-Master would have felt more appropriate. However, maybe Damon’s choice is a bit of wishcasting for his character who longed to return to the land of Ithaca.
