While chatting with PEOPLE ahead of the release of The Odyssey, the movie star, 55, revealed the secret to the couple’s 21-year marriage.
“Boy, I’ve always loathed to give any advice because I feel everybody’s different and everybody’s relationship is different,” he says.

But when it comes to his own marriage, he adds, “There’s a lot of love and respect underneath the relationship, and a lot of trust. It’s built on a very sturdy foundation. We continue to grow and evolve as people, and so I guess that foundation’s really everything.”
Matt adds, “It’s the greatest thing in my life, but everybody’s different.”
The Hollywood power couple met in April 2003 and tied the knot two years later. They have welcomed three daughters together, Isabella, Gia and Stella.
Matt is also dad to Luciana’s daughter, Alexia, whom she shares with her ex Arbello Barroso.

Notably, Luciana is a partner at Matt and Affleck’s production company Artist’s Equity.

“She’s been a part of that for me since I’ve known her. She reads everything I’m doing. She looks at cuts of movies. I’ve really relied on her notes for 23 years,” Matt tells PEOPLE.
“While I was doing The Odyssey, she was producing the movie that Ben was directing and so they have their own work-life and creative, professional relationship. We have one altogether at the company, but they went off and did this movie while I was away and that’s great to see,” he says.
Luciana and all four of their daughters showed up to support Matt at the London premiere of The Odyssey on July 6.
Damon stars as Odysseus in Christopher Nolan’s newest movie based on Homer’s ancient Greek poem of the same name. The movie is out in theaters on Thursday, July 16.
