Savannah Guthrie returned to the Today show this morning for the first time since an intruder broke into the show’s studio last Thursday. She did not appear on-air Friday — her co-host Craig Melvin said that she was getting an “early start” to the weekend. Though Guthrie was reportedly not the focus of the intruder, it’s clearly an upsetting incident, considering her mother, Nancy Guthrie, disappeared in February and is still missing. Savannah returned to Today in April while continuing the search for her mother, and in June, three separate ransom notes were sent to different locations. The ominous acts would later be debunked and deemed fake by the FBI in July. Now, she has to deal with threats at her day job, too.
The intruder, identified as 41-year-old Andrew Truelove, went into an unauthorized area and began shouting racial slurs at Melvin. Melvin alerted security, and Truelove was removed. “NBC and Today take the safety and security of our employees, talent, staff and guests extremely seriously,” Today said in a statement. “We are reviewing the incident and our security protocols and remain committed to providing a safe and secure environment for everyone who works at and visits our studios.” Melvin returned to air the next day but is currently on a prescheduled vacation. Truelove, meanwhile, was charged with two felonies: burglary in the third degree as a hate crime and menacing in the third degree as a hate crime. Hopefully, this is the end of the Today show’s woes.
