A first-look image of Sheridan Smith’s first film role in four years has been released ahead of its world premiere. Directed by Rebel Wilson, Girl Group is set to premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival on 11 September.
Alongside Smith and Wilson, who also appears in the cast, Girl Group stars Marvel’s Randall Park, Derry Girls’ Jamie-Lee O’Donnell and Man Like Mobeen’s Guz Khan.
The film centres on Wilson’s character, a pop diva who is kicked out of the reunion tour for her girl group, played by music icons Ashley Roberts of The Pussycat Dolls, Mel C from the Spice Girls, and Shaznay Lewis of All Saints.

A first-look image that accompanied the announcement shows both Wilson and Smith in character on stage, looking as glamorous as you would expect from pop stars, dressed head-to-toe in sequins.
Sharing the new image on Instagram, creator Rebel Wilson wrote: “We can’t wait for the world premiere of GIRL GROUP at the Toronto International Film Festival, September 11th!
“Thank you @tiff_net, thank you to my incredible cast and crew – this movie is if fun and girl power and friendship had a threesome! It’s funny, emotional and chocka block full of awesome music as I’m sure you can imagine 🎵 🌟 🎤 🍿 @girlgroupmovie (more deets to come).”
A synopsis teases that the film sees Wilson’s character “slapped with a sentence of court-ordered community service” and “seizes the chance to stage a comeback by coaching a group of misfit teen girls for a major record label audition”.
But she pushes the new group too far, which forces her “to confront the toxic industry that made her – and the self-destruction she can’t escape”.

Speaking about Girl Group when it was announced, executive producer Ryan Kroft said: “The timeless magic of a girl group and Rebel’s one-of-a-kind brand of comedy make this film a perfect fit for Live Nation Studios.
“The hilarious cast and music royalty cameos will make it a must-see for fans around the globe.”
Girl Group premieres at Toronto International Film Festival on 11 September. A release date is yet to be announced.
