The costumes are back at San Diego Comic-Con.
Tens of thousands of fans filled the San Diego Convention Center this week for Comic-Con International, which runs through Sunday, and many of them came dressed for the occasion. The convention floor and the surrounding Gaslamp Quarter turned into a showcase of elaborate, handmade costumes drawn from anime, manga, video games and film.
Recent anime and manga hits were well represented. Brianna Bobadilla, of San Diego, came as Riyo Reaper from “Gachiakuta.” A group of friends turned out as the apprentice witches of “Witch Hat Atelier,” and Aylin Sotelo, who traveled from Mexico, dressed as Nurse Joy from “Pokémon.”
Some of the biggest moments came from the celebrities. On Thursday, Johnny Depp made a surprise appearance in full Ebenezer Scrooge costume, staying in character as he crashed a Hall H panel to debut the trailer for his upcoming film “Ebenezer.” On Friday, Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong surprised fans near Petco Park with an impromptu performance, playing the band’s song “Basket Case” and tossing ice cream and T-shirts to the crowd.
Inside the convention’s cavernous Hall H, studios previewed some of their biggest coming releases, including Marvel Studios’ “Avengers: Doomsday,” Prime Video’s “Blade Runner 2099” and a new season of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.”
Comic-Con International runs through Sunday, July 26.
