As we wait and see whether Sadie Sink really is playing Jean Grey in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Marvel is keeping us waiting for the first casting news for its long-awaited X-Men reboot.
We knew that the new movie would be directed by Jake Schreier – who previously directed Thunderbolts* – and that Schreier has reunited with Beef creator Lee Sung Jin and Thunderbolts* co-writer Joanna Calo to write the movie.
However, there’s just been a lot of speculation over who will be in the X-Men movie, with names linked including Adam Driver, Cailee Spaeny, Charles Melton, Patrick Wilson and many, many more.
It was thought the cast – or at least some of the names attached – would be announced during the Comic-Con panel, but it wasn’t to be. For some, it’ll be confirmation that Sink really is playing Jean Grey in the new Spider-Man movie.

Marvel fans weren’t happy with the lack of news, even if some have now speculated that the announcement will come at next month’s D23 Expo. Historically though, D23 has been used by Marvel to promote its TV shows instead.
“Was so disappointed they didn’t do an X-Men cast reveal. Even if they didn’t reveal Jean, they could have at least revealed casting for Logan, Scott, Storm, Charles and Erik,” one wrote, with another adding: “Where the heck is cast of X-Men Reboot? how awful.”
For some, it all added up to a lacklustre Comic-Con panel for Marvel, with one fan writing: “No X-Men, no Wanda, not even a new cast reveal from Doomsday, disappointing doesn’t even begin to describe it.”

Ahead of Comic-Con, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige joked that Driver rejecting an MCU role has become a “long-lived tradition”, which had some expecting it to be a tease for his X-Men casting (which still might happen).
“It’s no secret we’d like to [get Driver], but it’s a tradition to Zoom with him and then he passes,” he explained. “He couldn’t be more cordial. He is usually upfront about how he is feeling.”
Of course, we will be seeing a lot of the original X-Men stars in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. Barring any surprise appearances, we’ll be seeing Ian McKellen’s Magneto, Patrick Stewart’s Professor X, Rebecca Romijn’s Mystique, James Marsden’s Cyclops, Alan Cumming’s Nightcrawler and Kelsey Grammer’s Beast in the movie.
It will likely mark their final on-screen appearance before the reboot changes the cast up, but with the multiverse in the MCU, anything is possible.
