Anne Hathaway has shared a disappointing update on a third film in The Princess Diaries franchise. It’s been 22 years since the actor played Mia Thermopolis, who went from normal American teen to royalty, and fans are desperate to know what the character has been up to for the past two decades.

In recent months, Hathaway has been extremely busy, with The Devil Wears Prada 2 arriving in May and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey sailing in earlier this month. Furthermore, survival sci-fi thriller The End of Oak Street is hitting the big screen in August.

The actor had previously stated that that The Devil Wears Prada 2 “cropped up unexpectedly and took over the space” meant for The Princess Diaries 3, adding that it became “impossible to focus on both at the same time”.

It’s also been a busy time for Hathaway in her personal life, with the actor announcing last month that she was expecting a child with her husband, Adam Shulman.

Now, when asked about The Princess Diaries 3 by Sirius XM, Hathaway said: “I’m busy making baby No. 3 and that has sort of taken the place of knowing exactly when I can make Princess Diaries 3.”

It’s not all bad news, however, as the Academy Award winner did confirm that a screenplay was being written, and even stated that a “story breakthrough” had been made in recent times.

“I think we are moving in the right direction. The script that we were working on — we kind of had to start over with this new direction, which is not the update I think anybody wants, but we all feel really good that this is gonna be the one,” she explained.

With The Devil Wears Prada 2 and The Odyssey both being released this year, Hathaway has already had a huge 2026 — and it’s not over yet.

October will see the release of Verity, the highly-anticipated adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s 2018 novel of the same name. Hathaway leads a stacked cast for the psychological thriller, which also stars Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett.

The film follows Lowen Ashleigh (Johnson), a struggling writer who takes a job working for best-selling author Verity Crawford (Hathaway). While at the Crawford’s remote estate, Lowen discovers secrets about Verity and her husband Jeremy (Hartnett).
